National Seminar on the Birth Anniversary of Maulana Abul Kalam Azad - 11-11-2022
DoE, 11th November, 2022
The Department of Education organised National Seminar on the birth anniversary of Maulana Abul Kalam Azad on 11-11-2022. Prof. (Dr.) Mujibul Hasan Siddiqui, Chairperson, Department of Education, welcomed The Chief guest and other dignitaries on dice by offering them bouquet. The Chief Guest of the Programme, Mr. Firoz Bakht, former chancellor Maulana Azad National Urdu University (MANUU) Hyderabad, delivered his inaugural speech.

Mr. Firoz Bakht stated that Maulana Abul Kalam Azad, whose 134th Birth Anniversary falls today, that is, November 11th, and who joined lacerated hearts and broken beliefs, remains relevant as masses look askance all around in their search for stability in the prevailing times of confusion, communalism and radicalism.
The eleven hundred years of common history, opines Azad in “Al-Hilal”, December 29th, 1912, have enriched India with the common Hindu-Muslim achievement. According to Maulana, our languages, our poetry, our literature, our culture, our art, our dress, our manners and customs, the innumerable happenings of our daily life, everything bears the stamp of our joint endeavour.
There is indeed no aspect of our life which has escaped this stamp. Our languages were different, but we grew to use a common language; our manners and customs were dissimilar, but they acted and reacted on each other, and thus produced a new synthesis. Whether we like it or not, we have now become an Indian nation, united and indivisible. No fantasy or artificial scheming to separate and divide can break this unity. We must accept the logic of fact and history, and engage ourselves in the fashioning of our future.
Maulana Abul Kalam Azad is, by any reckoning, a major figure in twentieth-century Indian History. He was a scholar thoroughly trained in the traditional Islamic sciences, with great intellectual abilities and eloquence of pen and speech.
He had, in addition, a remarkable openness to modern western knowledge even as he opposed western rule over India. He made a lasting contribution to Urdu prose literature with his translation and interpretation of the Qur'an.
The intellectual history of Islam in India has long been described in terms of two contrasting currents: the one tending towards confrontation, the other towards assimilation, with the Hindu milieu.
Maulana coalesced with endogenic creativity, the Vedantic vision of many parts of truth with the Islamic doctrines of Wahdat-e-Deen (unity of religion) and Sulah-e-Kul (universal peace). Maulana is revered without really being understood because to a large bulk of people, he has been reduced to a noble “totem” of the political breed called the “nationalist Muslims.” Azad remains a shining example of the fusion of the rationalist heritage of Islam and the compassionate heritage of India.
Maulana’s watchword was assimilation and communal concord at all levels. Dr. Zakir Hussain considered Azad as one of the greatest innovators in the history of Islam.
This dichotomy is, of course, an oversimplification, for separatist and syncretises represent extreme points on a spectrum of possible intellectual responses by Muslims to the Indian scene.
His speech to the Muslims of Delhi delivered on October 23, 1947 from the steps of Jama Masjid is reflective of the man and the ideas he stood for and fought for. Tormented with the course of events in the aftermath of partition, Azad was able to offer advice to his Muslim brethren quoting the holy Quran: “Do not fear and do not grieve. If you possess truth, you will gain the upper hand.”
Reiterating that the partition of India was a fundamental mistake, Azad expressed his anguish: “It was not long ago that I told you that the two-nation theory was a death-knell for a life of faith. I entreated you to reject it, because the foundations upon which it rested were built of sand. But you paid no attention. You believed that the mad race of time would slow down to suit your convenience. Time, however, sped on. Those on whose support you were counting, have today, abandoned you; left you like waifs, exposed to the vagaries of your own kismet.”
Another of his speeches betrays a note of bitterness that he felt when India stood partitioned. “For thousands of years, five rivers of water have flowed in the Punjab. Today, a sixth river is flowing, the river of human blood. On the water we built bridges of brick, stone and steel. The bridge over the sixth river is being built of human corpses.”
The years during which Azad wrote and published the two volumes of his Tarjuman were a period that was politically unrewarding for him. For Indian Muslims generally, the period following the collapse of the Khilafat movement was a time of uncertainty. From 1930 onwards, growing communal disorder jeopardized Hindu-Muslim unity in the eyes of many former nationalist Muslim leaders.
The major concern of Azad’s life was the revival and reform of the Indian Muslims in all aspects of life, and his political hopes for them were within this context. For any such reform, he realized the key position of the ulema and of the traditional educational system which produces them. “In India Wins Freedom”, Azad states, “Since then, destiny, in her own hidden way, began to fashion a new India in place of the old. We brought our treasures with us, and India too was full of the riches of her own precious heritage. We gave our wealth to her, and she unlocked the doors of her own treasures to us. We gave her what she needed most, the most precious of gifts from Islam's treasury, the message of democracy and human equality.

Prof. M Waseem Raja, the Next Guest Speaker, Department of History, AMU, Aligarh, stated that delivered his talk on various facets of Maulana Azad’s personality. He explained Maulana Azad represented a glorious synthesis of cultures, civilizations, thoughts and philosophies, which have powerfully influenced India’s history. Accordingly, he acted as a bridge between the old and the new India. Maulana Azad’s ideas ranged from political, Religious, social Education and literary domains which are very comprehensive.
He also explained that it was failure of Muhammad Ali Jinnah to understand the fortunes of his community which proved disastrous whereas Maulana Azad had panacea for the ills of the community. According to Azad, United India had sizeable Muslim population and Muslims could have dictated their political wills and wishes, but unfortunately, partition happened. According to Prof Waseem Raja at present Pakistani/ Bangladeshi Muslims feel greatly elated whereas Indian Muslims feel trapped/caged and cornered in majoritarian politics of contemporary India. Azad was saddened and embittered by the partition, by the fact that his congress leaders had agreed to it. Azad’s Iconic Speech at Jama Masjid, 23 October 1947 still reverberates in the ears of millions, “It was not long ago when I warned you that the two-nation theory was death-knell to a meaningful, dignified life; forsake it. Azad was deadly against the partition of united India.
In his religious discourse, too he came out with unique ideas. Maulana Azad represented a wonderful synthesis of cultures, civilizations, thoughts and philosophies, which have powerfully influenced India's history. He acted as a bridge between Islam and other religions Maulana Abul Kalam Azad's Tarjuman- al-Qur'an is considered an important milestone in modem commentaries on Qur'an. Maulana's approach to Qur'an was unique though modern yet not devoid of traditionalism. With his interpretation (Tafsir) comes the concept of Wahdat-e-din i.e. unity of religion. Further, he developed faith in ijtihad (fresh interpretation of religious law). He came to believe that the exclusiveness and rigidity of the four schools of Muslim law-the Hanafite, the Shafi'ite, the Hanbalite and the Malikite were not conducive to the growth of independent religious thinking. The corner stone of Maulana Azad's religious ideology is the Quranic concept of rububiyat (God’s bounty as the nourisher of the world), is for all.
Maulana Abul Kalam Azad was the man who made India
realise the value of education. He
was independent India’s first education minister, and his birthday, 11
November, is celebrated as National Education Day. Addressing the conference on
All India Education on 16 January 1948, Maulana Azad emphasized, “We
must not for a moment forget, it is a birthright of every individual to receive
at least the basic education without which he cannot fully discharge his duties
as a citizen.”From his
early age, he showed a keen interest in literature, edited a weekly called Al-Misbah,
and started a monthly journal known as Lissan-us-Sidq. Azad emphasized the role of
education in national development and inspired the growth of science and
technology. During an opening address at the Indian Institute of Technology
(IIT) Kharagpur in August 1951, he said: One of the first decisions I took on
assuming charge as minister was that we must so improve the facilities for
higher technical education in the country that we would ourselves meet most of
our needs. Speaking at a meeting on 16 January 1948, Azad had said, “We
must not for a moment forget, it is a birthright of every individual to receive
at least the basic education without which he cannot fully discharge his duties
as a citizen.” He
also established ‘the board for adult education’ to facilitate education among
the uneducated adults.

Dr. M. Amthul Thawab, the Next Guest Speaker Principal and Head PG & Research Department of Commerce The Quaide Milleth College for Men Chennai stated that as we all know we celebrate National Education Day to commemorate the birth anniversary of Maulana Abul Kalam Azad, who is a great leader, freedom fighter, eminent educationist, and the first education Minister of India. Maulana Azad did not compromise on two major issues, first unity of India and Second education to its citizen. He believed that this will help to attain progress and peace. In the meeting of the Central Advisory Board of Education in Jan 1949, he spoke about the National Approach of Government towards Education. “The first and foremost task of the national Government is the provision of free and compulsory basic education for all. This golden dream of Azad is converted into reality now, as the Historic RTE Act 2009 which emphasizes free and compulsory primary education for children between 6 to 14 years - A Maulana Azad commitment to provide secular, liberal, modern, and universal education that is relevant today and forever. His ideas continue to guide us for achieving education for all. It was Azad’s initiatives and encouragements that a number of Institutions and Laboratories of scientific research were established in a very short period of time. He also encouraged development of art, literature and cultural activities. He appreciated the need for setting up Centres of Excellence in diverse fields.
Dr. Rahat Abrar , former Director Urdu Academy and Ex- PRO, AMU Aligarh , the next Guest Speaker stated that Maulana Abul Kalam Azad was staunch opponent of Sir Syed Ahmad Khan’ political ideology and educational philosophy but he was strong supporter of Jamaluddin Afganis’ political strategy and his Islamic union movement. But Maulana Abul Kalam Azad was a great supporter of views and he stated that Sir Syed was the person of modern era to feel the need for a new interpretation of Islam that is broad mindedness and progressive. Dr. Rahat Abrar further stated that Maulana Abul Kalam Azad was an education minister for the welfare of Aligarh Muslim University.
Next Guest Speaker was Prof. Intekhab Alam Khan, Professor in Education, King Abdullah University, Saudi Arabia. He stated about the contribution of Maulana Abul Kalam Azad in national and educational development. Economic development, Technological development, social development, Peace, unity, integrity, etc. Education plays significant role in development of individuality and all-round development of personality. Citizenship, political interaction, and economic activities, moral development and humanities. Gandhi ji once said that Maulana had the calibre of Plato, Aristotle and Pythagoras. Education minister acharya Kriplani once said that maulana was not a historical personality rather a considerable period of history was inherent in him. The first magazine that maulana published in Calcutta was lisanul sidq (the voice of the truth). It reflected maulana’s own self (religious and philosophical). He exhibited his writing ability in Al Hilal, Al-Balagh, Tarjumaan-e-Qur’an, etc. All the titles were in Arabic that showed his love for his home language which he learned at Makkah. He was an accomplished scholar in Arabic, Persian, Urdu, Hindi, Bengali and English. He was an outstanding scholar. He was a poet, philosopher, educationist, politician, and most importantly the architect of Indian education. He was a champion of unity, integrity, peace, secularism and nationalism. Despite all odds, due to his vision and educational qualities, Maulana was made the first education minister of free India which educational foundation was extremely fragile. He is credited to various commissions, committees, academies & institutes as UGC, CABE, IITS, Sahitya academy, etc. Maulana Abul Kalam Azad gave top priorities to Basic education, -Adult education, -literacy.
In the morning the Students of the Department of Education, AMU, also prepared and presented Various Posters and Picture Images to commemorate the Birth Anniversary of Maulana Azad. The Resource person, Prof. Jahitha Begam A., Head, Department of Education, Gandhi Gram Rural University, Tamil Nadu, delivered a very insightful lecture on the various aspects of Gandhian Philosophy of Education. She emphasized on the service and sacrifice rendered by our freedom fighters and how Gandhian Principles influenced the basis of the Indian National Movement in drawing out best in human beings, be it Apartheid in South Africa, especially to Indians for the cause of freedom and Swaraj. She also highlighted on the concept of *Buniyadi Shiksha* drawn out in the NEP 2020. She reiterated some valuable life lessons of Gandhiji and urged the students to carry forward the Gandhian Legacy by adhering to the path of Truth and Non-violence.
Prof. Jahitha Begum A. stated that it is very important to uplift the values and ideas of Mahatma Gandhiji among all the students as well as teachers. Gandhian thoughts, basic principles, salient features of Basic Education, Gandhian philosophy at several planes and valuable life lessons of Gandhi were introduced skillfully. Gandhi’s fundamental views on Lok-Vidya ‘Education For All’. Gandhi stressed minor element of the education curriculum. Emphasized “Socially Useful Productive Work” (SUPW). Gandhi concentrated on vocational education including spinning, weaving and handcraft. He turned classroom into a centre of rational thinking. According to him teacher should teach more than text-books.
Prof. Jahitha Begum A. highlighted on the concept of *Nai Talim* (New Education) and stressed on vocational education that goes beyond textbooks. She also made note of the prevalence of Gandhian principles at the Spiritual, cultural, moral, political and economic levels.
The main features of basic principles like Free & compulsory Education to all between the ages 7-14, Craft centered Education, Self-supporting aspect of Education, Simple co-operative community living, Mother-tongue as medium of instruction and religious and moral training were emphasized by Gandhi ji.
“Gandhi says mother tongue of the child should be the medium of instruction”. It is well understood that young children learn and grasp non trivial concepts more quickly in their home language/mother tongue which is spoken by local communities. Thereafter, the mother tongue shall continue to be taught as a language wherever possible. This will be followed by both public and private schools.
According to
Gandhi “If textbooks are treated as a vehicle for education, the living word of
the teacher has very little value”, in classrooms more interaction has to be
encouraged, content should be reduced and rational thinking has to be enhanced.
In teaching and learning process of Basic Education system, curriculum content
should be reduced in each subject, and core essentials should be taught.
As per Gandhian thoughts, NEP2020 also focused on key concepts, ideas, applications and problem solving. Classroom sessions should focus regularly with more fun and creativity. Collaborative and exploratory activities for students for deeper and more experiential learning will be followed in NEP2020 as done in Gandhian basic principles.
Subjects such as physical education the arts and crafts and vocational skills in addition to science, humanities and mathematics will be incorporated throughout the school curriculum with a consideration for what is interesting. His craft centered education has modern alternatives such as digital skills and technology. All these concepts related to Gandhian thoughts are find a place in NEP 2020. The main idea of in building Gandhian thoughts in everyone’s mind was wonderfully conferred with the fullest activation of the audience. According to Gandhi, quality education concentrates on the learner’s complete growth and instills values like non-violence, honesty and resilience to build a sustainable society. To create a bright future of our nation it is believed that the vision of holistic education envisioned by Gandhi and recommended by NEP would be helpful.

The Hon’ble Prime Minister Sri Narendra Modi has
always been a source of Inspiration and motivation to go ahead beyond any
obstacles and barriers with helping hands not only as the Political head of the
Nation but more than it, as the Head of
the family of 125 Crores Indians, whether it is the time of calamity like

but even parents and Teachers wait every year for the Inspirational talk and Tactics
to cope up with Mental stress, exam phobia and real meaning of educational
achievements.
This year, after a
struggle of almost two years and getting the Historical triumph on COVID-19, the
Prime Minister Sri Narendra Modi addressed thousands of people in physical Mode
in the Talkatotra Stadium New Delhi, with a new zeal, enthusiasm and all his
humbleness with a spirit of guardianship as the head of the family of this
great Nation-
The Live programme at the Department of Educaiton, AMU Aligarh was initiated by Prof. Mujibul Hasan Siddiqui, Chairperson, Department of Education and was attended by all the faculty members of the Departments, Research scholars and students. The number of participants was around 60.
In the event, the questions raised by students from different corners of the country, related to the anxiety faced by the students in facing examinations, were taken positively by Honorable Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi. The response of the Honorable Prime Minister to the queries of the students were effective enough for the students to tackle the parental pressures and academic stress during the time of examinations.
Some of the important Take Aways of Pariksha Pe Charcha 2022 by PM Sri Narendra Modi
How to deal with distractions when learning online?
It was the mind and concentration that were the problem and not the mode of learning.
Keep online learning as a sort of "reward" after studying offline or use it to supplement the offline notes they received from their teachers.
Use mobile tools to discipline oneself and keep track of how long students were using apps other than for studying.
Spend some time daily connecting with themselves and introspecting.
Exam stress is common before preparations and it takes away from one's precious study time. How to face or cope up with Exam Stress?
Keep yourself away from being panic and don’t compare yourselves to other students or friends.
Prepare for exams themselves with full confidence and appear for exams in a festive mood. Make the exam itself a festival and enjoy it.
How to come true to the expectations of Parents what they do with their children during Examination?
I wish to say to parents please don’t impose your own expectations on kids. Every kid is unique.
Every child has special talents and individual wishes. Try not to impose your expectations on them,"
Parents sometimes fail to closely observe the strength and interests of their children.
We should understand that every child is blessed with something extraordinary that parents and teachers fail to discover a lot of times.
When a student should study, day or night and and How he/she should prepare for exams?
Revise what you learned in class with your friends which would help you retain the information. students should focus on the outcome of their studies and study at a time when they are comfortable and will be more likely to imbibe what they study.
I didn't believe in preparing or studying just for specific exams. t means you are not studying for knowledge gain but only cramming for exams.
Knowledge will help you in exams of life.
On 'Swachh Bharat Abhiyaan'
Children in India were spreading awareness on the 'Swachh Bharat Abhiyaan' cleanliness campaign. Sustainability and helping the planet, should be the top priority of students because you are future of this Nation.
There was a need to begin the P3 movement or the ‘Pro Planet People’ movement.
We need to stop the use and throw attitude and instead take small steps to save resources and reuse them to save the environment.
On National Education Policy
The untiring struggle of many people and brains of this Nation in preparing National Education Policy is commendable.
I remember how officials had spent several years brainstorming and collecting suggestions on the NEP before implementation.
On Sports in School Life
The need of sports as an integral part of life is to be acknowledged and therefore NEP-2020 allowed one access to new avenues if they wanted to change fields.
Sports is very important for students in school life.
“Khulna hai aur khilna hai to khelna hai”
On Technology and Competition in Life
Technology should be taken as an opportunity and not as a problem. It should be used effectively.
Today, students are developing 3D printers and running apps for Vedic mathematics. They're efficiently using technology,"
Competition should be considered as life's biggest gift and opportunity for this generation as it took one forward.
We should be proud that we are proving ourselves amidst so much competition,"
On Importance of Educating Girls
Daughters are the assets of their families.
Don’t discriminate between daughters and sons. Give them equal opportunity. When you will give them equal opportunity, daughters will outperform sons.
In board exam results girls often fared better than boys.
The aspirations of girls today could make every Indian proud and that opportunities should be given to fulfil these aspirations.

knowledge, instead of getting afraid of examinations. Students of the

Minister was thought provoking and enlightening for them to manage stress at
the time of examination.

Chief Guest Prof.
Indoo Panday Khandoori , Director, Faculty Development Centre
(PMMMNMTT) Govt of India at HNB Garhwal
University, Srinagar (Garhwal) Uttarakhand stressed
that empowerment of women means respecting
their privacy. An environment should be created where women should have the
freedom to make their own decisions and act accordingly. Even educated women
are keeping silent towards violence. They do not have the courage to speak up
and act against this injustice. We have to go a long way to encourage women in
all aspects of development.
Resource Person Dr. Ushoshi Guha, Educationist, Nagpur, Maharashtra, said that Men and Women are the two wheels of this world. According to her, the most dangerous disparity is the gender disparity. She said that gender justice is curtailed in the country through inhuman and illegal activities like compulsory female genital mutilation, domestic violence, gender inequality, violence and sexual abuse. There is an urgent need to redefine the value system for giving adequate respect and consideration to women, and this could be possible through education and changing the mindset of society. Several social customs prevalent in the society pull back women in getting engaged in politics, hindering from decision making and curtailing from getting property rights. Anti-female attitude should be discouraged in all ways, and this is the peak time for all of us to take a pledge that women will be treated equally along with men with respect; so that we can establish a peaceful society.
The other our resource person Prof. HemalataTalesra, Director, K.B.Dave College of Education, Ahmedabad, Gujarat made her presentation on the topic “Catalyzing women empowerment for an Egalitarian society.”Though there is a reduction in women's exploitation after independence, women are still struggling for equal rights. A detailed explanation of the articles of the Indian constitution, namely Article 14, 15 (1), 15 (3) and 51 (A) was given by her. Efforts made by the Government, Legislation and self-help groups in protecting and safeguarding the dignity of women were detailed in her speech.
One of the other distinguished
resource person Prof. Rajeshwari Narendran, Udaipur University, Rajasthan, started
her lecture with the statement that “In
every woman there is a man, and in every man, there is a woman”. She
highlighted the need for respect towards women and the importance of ensuring
freedom to women by citing examples of poetic lines. Set back on the freedom
and rights of women is a major threat that we are facing today, she said.
Prof. Nisar Ahmad Khan, Dean Faculty of Social Sciences, AMU Aligarh and Patron of the programm made the presidential address with the well-stated point that empowerment of women is possible with the wholehearted and unanimous cooperation of all stakeholders of the society. Discrimination against women could be seen even in developed countries. We need cooperation, not dominance, he said.
